Some People Make You Sick: When Did Protecting Children Become Such a Damn Struggle?
Every once in a while, I read something in the local news that makes me stop, shake my head, and wonder just how screwed up this world has become. Today was one of those days.
I was reading about a grown man who was charged with first-degree sodomy involving a child. And honestly? It makes my blood boil.
A child. Let that sink in for a damn minute. A CHILD.
We're talking about someone who is supposed to have the maturity to understand right from wrong, the ability to recognize the difference between right and evil, and the basic human decency to know that children deserve to be protected. Yet here we are, reading stories like this in our local news.
What the hell is wrong with people?
A Betrayal of Our Most Fundamental Obligation
Children should be worrying about school, playing with their friends, enjoying their childhood, and feeling safe in their own homes and communities. They shouldn't have to be victims of adults who abuse the power, trust, and physical advantages they have over someone who cannot protect themselves in the same way.
And what makes this even more infuriating is that children depend on adults to protect them. They depend on us to be the responsible ones. To be the people they can trust. When an adult is accused of violating that responsibility in such a horrific way, it isn't just disturbing. It's a betrayal of the most basic obligation we have to the next generation. Much like respect and basic human decency have eroded across modern society, this is where the line must be drawn permanently.
I'm sick of hearing about children being hurt by the very people who should know better.
I'm sick of the excuses people make for adults who abuse children.
And I'm sick of a world where we have to keep reminding people that children are not objects, toys, or targets. They are human beings who deserve safety, dignity, and the chance to grow up without being victimized.
"Children are not objects, toys, or targets. They are human beings who deserve safety, dignity, and the chance to grow up without being victimized."
Due Process, Zero Excuses, and Absolute Accountability
Let's get one thing straight: an accusation is not a conviction, and the facts of a case must be established through the legal process. But that doesn't change the seriousness of the allegation or the anger people understandably feel when they read about a child potentially being harmed in this way.
If the allegations are proven, then the person responsible should face the full consequences of the law. No special treatment. No excuses. No pretending that the harm doesn't matter because the accused happens to be someone's relative, friend, neighbor, or acquaintance.
And where is the outrage when these stories come out? Why does it sometimes feel like people are more concerned about protecting an adult's reputation than protecting a child? Why do we spend so much time arguing about everything under the sun while the safety of children should be one of the few things that unites us all?
Reputations Mean Nothing When a Child Is Harmed
I don't care who someone knows. I don't care how popular they are. I don't care what kind of reputation they've built for themselves. If someone abuses a child, that person's connections and social standing should not shield them from accountability. As I've said before, talk is cheap and actions are the receipt—and no amount of status excuses predatory behavior.
Protect the child. Investigate the allegations. Pursue justice. Hold the guilty accountable.
That's what matters.
And yes, when I read something like this, part of me wants to throw my hands up and ask why people like this even exist in a world that already has enough problems. It is the kind of anger that comes from seeing the most vulnerable among us potentially subjected to something they should never have to experience.
Justice for the Victim, Not a Public Spectacle
But the answer isn't vigilante justice or becoming the very thing we're angry about. The answer is making sure children are protected, victims are supported, investigations are taken seriously, and the legal system does its job.
Because the child in that story matters more than the headlines, the gossip, or the public spectacle surrounding the case.
That child deserves justice. That child deserves support. And that child deserves a future that isn't defined by what someone else may have done to them.
So, yes, I'm pissed off. I'm disgusted that stories like this exist, and I'm tired of a world where children can be put in situations no child should ever face.
"If you cannot respect a child's safety, boundaries, and humanity, you have no business being around children. Period."
The World Owes Them Protection
We cannot change every evil thing that happens in this world. But we can stop making excuses for people who harm children. We can listen to victims. We can speak up when something isn't right. We can demand accountability instead of looking the other way because the truth is uncomfortable.
Children don't owe the world a damn thing. The world owes them protection.
And until we start treating that responsibility with the seriousness it deserves, we are going to keep reading these stories, getting angry, and wondering how the hell we got here.
Enough is enough. Protect our children. Stop making excuses. And hold those responsible accountable.
